What Is Fireweed?

The Forgotten Magical Herb

Fireweed Tea is also known as Ivan Chai, Willowherb, Alaskan Herbal Tea, and Wild Rosebay.

Fireweed in bloom creates a  sight of striking beauty. The fields of its majestic purple flowers could be seen in summer in northern latitudes from Alaska to Nova Scotia and from Northern Europe to Siberia. It is a floral emblem of Yukon and it is considered the national flower of Greenland.

Fireweed has a rich history of use as both food and medicine. Its shoots and roots were a nutritious native spring food, containing significant amounts of Vitamin A, B3, and C, as well as being an excellent source of both calcium and magnesium.

Even more extensively fireweed was traditionally used as a medicine. The Haida people, the Cheyenne of Montana, the Woods Cree of Saskatchewan, the Dena’ina of Alaska, the Chukchi of Siberia, and peoples of North Europe all cherished fireweed as a powerful remedy for all sorts of gastrointestinal problems, internal parasites, colds, headaches, and insomnia, as calmative, and as a first and the only aid for cuts, bruises and wounds for fast healing.

The recent numerous scientific studies on fireweed medicinal properties have shown exciting results. The anti-inflammatory properties of fireweed have been clinically proven to be stronger than cortisone in relieving skin irritations and eczema. The glucuronic acid present in it has been proven to be therapeutic for arthritis and rheumatism. Its antiseptic properties and high mucilage presence makes it a gentle, yet effective remedy for relieving all sorts of gastrointestinal and stomach inflammations, and its high tannin content explains its mildly laxative effect. Several studies have found endothelin B in fireweed, which is an active compound that inhibits human prostate growth and possesses anti-viral and anti-tumor activity, and has antioxidant activity equal to vitamin C.

Elise Krohn, a passionate herbalist and a native plant specialist considers fireweed tea an excellent long-term restorative and balancing remedy. She wrote: “For me, fireweed represents the promise that beauty will return after bodily sickness or environmental destruction. When woodlands are damaged from fire or clear-cutting, it is fireweed that brings the first promise of recovery. It reminds us that nature has her healing cycle too, one initiated by this lush, fiery medicine springing up in abundance.”

Loose Leaf Tea vs Granulated (Crush-Tear-Curl) Tea

Which Tea Is Right For You?

Loose Leaf Tea

Loose Leaf Tea is handmade from whole tea leaves which have been dried and processed and are higher in quality. Here are some of the benefits:

  • Taste the Difference: Loose-leaf tea offers a flavorful experience. By using whole tea leaves, loose-leaf tea preserves the full range of delicate flavors and aromas that the tea has to offer, resulting in a richer, more complex taste that is sure to please any tea drinker.
  • Ritual: Preparing loose-leaf tea can be a relaxing and meditative ritual that adds to the overall experience of enjoying tea. The process of steeping loose-leaf tea allows you to appreciate the aroma and appearance of the tea, making it a sensory experience that can help you unwind and destress.
  • Cost Savior: Loose-leaf tea may cost more, but it's actually a better value over time. This is because loose-leaf tea can be brewed more times which gives you more cups per bag of tea. This makes it a more cost-effective choice in the long run.

Granulated (Crush-Tear-Curl) Tea

Granular CTC Tea is machine processed using a method called Crush, Tear, and Curl which crushes leaves into small granules. Here are some of the benefits:

  • Flavor Fiesta: CTC tea doesn't hold back when it comes to flavor. The granular consistency and machine processing give it a bold, concentrated taste. If you're a tea drinker who wants to make a statement with every sip, CTC's got you covered.
  • Time-Saving: Perfect for when you're in a rush but still need your tea fix. With its quick and easy brewing process, you can enjoy a hot cup of tea without sacrificing precious minutes from your busy day. And let's not forget the granules that make measuring out the perfect amount a breeze.
  • Shelf Life Savior: When it comes to stocking up on tea, CTC granular tea is the savior. CTC tea is more compact than loose-leaf tea and takes less space.

How To Brew The Tea

Loose Leaf Tea

  • Use 2-4 tablespoons of tea and place it into a 500 ml teapot. Boil water and pour it into the teapot to brew. If you want to brew in a cup, use 1 tablespoon in a cup diffuser.
  • For a light tea, let it sit for 3-5 minutes. For a stronger tea, you can let it sit for 30 minutes - 8 hours. The longer you brew the stronger the tea will be, if the tea becomes too strong, you can use it as a brew and dilute it with boiling water. This is how we drink our tea.
  • You can repeat the process for up to 3 times.
  • Iced Tea is also extremely refreshing and thirst-quenching. You can pour the tea out into a different jug, let it cool to room temperature, and place it in the fridge.

Granulated (Crush-Tear-Curl) Tea

  • Use 2-4 teaspoons of tea and place it into a 500 ml teapot. Boil water and pour it into the teapot to brew. If you want to brew in a cup, use 1 teaspoon in a cup diffuser.
  • Let it sit for 3-5 minutes. For a stronger tea, you can let it sit for 30 minutes - 8 hours. Remember that CTC tea is more tightly packed than loose-leaf tea, thus more concentrated. The longer you brew the stronger the tea will be, if the tea becomes too strong, you can use it as a brew and dilute it with boiling water. This is how we drink our tea.
  • You can repeat the process for up to 4 times.
